The Apple and the Tree
The photographs in “The Apple and the Tree” include portraits of first-generation Armenian-American girls alongside their mothers in the backyards of their childhood homes. I was interested in photographing the mothers and daughters as both a documentation of a cultural transition in time and as a survey of double representation through portraiture. The backyard environments were used as a physical and symbolic common ground, tying the individuals together through space.
